Lowther South students took time out of their regular schedule on Earth Day, April 22, to explore non-traditional classes. The day was planned by teachers to reward fifth-graders for their hard work in their core academic classes during the year.
Throughout the year, students earned effort tickets during formative assessments for using good test taking skills, using the tools provided on the test, and getting a score of more than 80 percent or improving their score by 5 percent each time, according tao Allyson Lyman, one of the teachers who coordinated the day.
With input from the students, sessions were offered in: arts and crafts, basketball, computer games, dancing, drawing, football, kickball, soccer reading, video games and a movie. The sessions were led by volunteers from Emporia High School, Emporia State University, Walburn's Gym, Emporia Arts Council and the Emporia Recreation Center. Family Video also provided some supplies.
Students were allowed to choose up to four activities, based on the number of tickets they had earned during the year.
“We are really excited about the amount of support we have received from the community. There were many groups working together to make it a special day for our students,” Lyman said.
