Food service has been temporarily suspended at Emporia’s American Legion Post 5 after a vote by the members of the post Tuesday.
“The action was prompted by the resignation of long-time manager Nona Thomas, coupled with the fact that Legion officers had not been able to complete arrangements to replace her,” a press release stated.
John Sanderson, retiring post commander, said efforts will be made to get the food service running again as soon as possible. The suspension of food service will apply to Sunday Brunch starting May 3 and the Family Night on May 6 and all other scheduled dining services.
“The Post’s lounge will continue to operate and Bingo games will continue on Monday and Thursday nights with snacks available,” according to the press release. “Several groups will be affected by the suspension including the Kiwanis Club, Sertoma Club and Crime Stoppers.”
Sanderson said the Retired School Personnel will be served on Friday and for their meeting on June 5.
Thomas’ last day is May 2. She has been manager of the post’s food service and lounge for more than 20 years. She is leaving to become the food and beverage director at the Guesthouse Inn and Conference Center.
Also during Tuesday’s meeting, the Post installed seven new officers: Robert Edmiston, first vice commander; Norm Fields, second vice-commander; Richelle Birk, adjutant; Harry Groh, board member; Ron Whitney, finance officer; and Warren Ireland and David Welch, sergeants at arms. The new commander will be appointed by the board of directors.
