Coldsmith honored

Emporia author Don Coldsmith has received the 2009 Mountain Plains Library Association’s Literary Contribution Award. The presentation was part of a joint conference of the Kansas Library and Mountain Plains Library associations on April 2 in Wichita.

Coldsmith, the most widely published living Kansas Author, has published 45 books and has a new manuscript at the publisher. He is primarily known for his Spanish Bit saga, which prompted the Kansas Center for the Book at the state library to nominate him for the award.

A Kansas native, Coldsmith also writes a newspaper column, which appears in a number of Kansas and Missouri newspapers, including The Gazette.

ESU concert

The ESU Department of Music presents the Wind Ensemble Concert at 7:30 p.m. today in Albert Taylor Hall. The A Cappella and Community Chorus Concert will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First United Methodist Church. On May 5, the Cinco de Mayo Concert will performed by guest artists Estrella Ramirez and Iván Jiménez Olivera, voice and piano, at 7:30 p.m. in Heath Recital Hall of Beach Music Hall. General admission is $5; $4 for students and senior citizens. Information: 341-5431.

Fundraiser

The Emporia Arts Council is presenting “A Grand Night at the Races” at 6 p.m. today at the arts center, 618 Mechanic St. The event includes on-screen horse racing, mock betting and a live art auction. The “mock” betting windows open at 6:30 p.m. “sharp,” stated the news release. Track entry fees are $25 each person. This is an EAC fundraiser. Book series

The Emporia Public Library “Talk About Literature” series, “Women Around the World,” concludes with the discussion of “The Country Girls Trilogy” by Edna O’Brien (Ireland) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the large meeting room of the library. The discussion leader will be Nancy Hope of the Kansas Consortium for Teaching About Asia.

Family history

“Thanks for the Memories,” a free workshop for those who are interested in the research of family history, will be held at 3:30 p.m. May 9 at the Chase County Historical Museum in downtown Cottonwood Falls. According to the news release, the workshop is for those who are looking for more information about proper handling of old memorabilia, the latest methods for preserving memories in scrapbooks or showing off photographs in computer presentations, how to take better photographs that will tell future generations about their ancestors and what local history and genealogical resources are available at the newly-expanded Chase County Historical Museum and Library. There also will be a preview of Helen Rogler’s scrapbook collection about the lives of Henry and Maud Rogler and family, a display of scrapbooks assembled by local residents, a tour of the museum and library and refreshments. Winner

Sabrina Gross of Emporia received first place for her short story, “My Mother’s Work,” which she submitted in the 2009 Kansas Voices Contest. Gross and other winning authors will be recognized Saturday evening at the 20th Anniversary Winners’ Reading and dinner at Baden Square in Winfield.

Design contest

Dillons Stores, in conjunction with the Kroger Company, is conducting an online “Design a Reusable Shopping Bag Contest” and asking customers to submit designs for reusable grocery bags. Through May 15, customers can create their designs and vote on their favorite entries online at www.dillons.com/green, www.bakersplus.comgreen or www.geres.com/green. Anyone who designs a bag and has a valid shopper card will receive an electronic coupon loaded directly to their card for a free reusable bag (99 cent value), where valid. The winner of the contest will receive a $1,000 Kroger gift card and a chance to see their design sold in Kroger stores. Four finalists will be awarded $250 Kroger gift cards and five runners-up will receive $100 Kroger gift cards.
