Council Grove had to wait three weeks to finish its doubleheader against Herington. It turned out to be well worth the wait.
The Braves resumed Game One in the fourth inning trailing 4-2 and rallied to win 8-5. They completed the two-game sweep with a 17-2 run-rule victory in three innings in Game Two.
In Game One, the Braves scored four runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. Wes Roddy, Scott Bowles, Travis LeMay, and Dusty Maas had hits during the rally, and TJ Segebart added a sacrifice fly. The Braves added two runs in the sixth on a Derek Ziegenhirt single.
Broc Finch picked up the win and Ziegenhirt worked a perfect seventh inning to pick up the save.
In Game Two, the Council Grove offense made for an easy win for Sean Carr, who pitched three scoreless innings to improve to 4-0.
Broc Finch went 3-or-3 and all nine Braves in the lineup reached base and scored.
Council Grove improved to 7-5 overall and 6-2 in the Flint Hill League with the sweep.
“This sweep sets us up in pretty good shape in the league race,” Council Grove coach Joe Buchanan said. “If we are lucky enough to get a couple from Northern Heights (today), we’ll finish the week with five wins. That’s pretty good. It’s always good to get wins at Herington, and it was especially important to come from behind in this one after the three-week rain delay. We couldn’t afford to let that one slip away.”
The Braves play at Northern Heights today at 4:30 p.m.
