Emporia State had to travel to Hays on Monday to play its doubleheader against Washburn, but even an inconvenient drive couldn’t stop the Hornets from continuing their hot streak.
Emporia State won 10-1 and 9-8 to sweep Washburn and remain at the top of the MIAA. Ryan Anthony’s pitching and a nine-run fourth inning made the first game a breeze, but shaky pitching forced the ESU offense to play catch up in the finale.
Trailing 8-6 going into the eighth inning, Mike Sharp and Marc Albers led off with back-to-back home runs to tie the game. With one out, Andy Cotton hit a single and advanced to second on an error by the Washburn left fielder. After advancing to third on a Conner Crumbliss ground out, Cotton scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
