A storm that brought ice and snow to Kansas beginning Friday afternoon was a contributing factor in a two-vehicle accident that killed a Marion County woman about seven miles south of Hillsboro about 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
Sharon Kay Chamberlain, 58, of Hillsboro was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Chamberlain was a cousin of Blaine and Carol Warnkentine of Emporia.
“At the time of the accident, the roadway was ice-covered and extremely slick,” Marion County Sheriff Robert P. Craft wrote in a press release about the collision.
The accident happened at 120th and Indigo Roads.
Craft said that Chelsea Relswig, 23, of Hillsboro, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer south on Indigo when it slid sideways into a 2001 Chevrolet Prism driven by Donald Chamberlain, 61, also of Hillsboro.
The front of the Prism struck the passenger side of the Trailblazer, which went into a ditch and rolled onto its side.
Donald Chamberlain was taken to Newton Medical Center and later transferred to Wichita, Craft wrote in the press release.
He and Reiswig were wearing safety restraints. Sharon Chamberlain was wearing a seatbelt with the shoulder restraint behind her back when the accident occured, Craft said.
