On dean’s list
Hallie Kretsinger of Emporia was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2008 semester at Washington University in St. Louis. Kretsinger, a graduate of Emporia High School, is the daughter of Brock and Mary Kretsinger of Emporia. She is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences. To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.5 or above and be enrolled in at least 14 graded units.
Off to England
Ryan J. Schulze, son of Don and Susan Schulze of Dakota Springs, S.D., has completed requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology with honors at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He will leave soon for England to begin post-doctoral work as a research assistant at the University of Bristol. He is the grandson of Fred and Ima Jean Markowitz of Emporia and the late Joseph and Bernadine Schulze of Olpe.
Chosen for Chimes
Kelsie Ball of Eureka, who is studying family studies and human services at Kansas State University, has been selected to be a member, for the 2009-1010 school year, of Chimes, a special honorary at Kansas State University that promotes scholarship, leadership and service.
Academic honor
Melissa Heinitz, a junior at Emporia High School, was recently honored at the Wichita State University annual Presidential Scholar Days. The top 10 percent of juniors from high schools across the state were selected for this designation based on their scholastic achievements. Each student was presented with a certificate and special gift on behalf of the university.
Riverside 4-H meeting
The monthly meeting of the Riverside 4-H club was JR. Officer Night and was called to order by JR. president Jade Jenkins. Roll call, “If you could take a trip anywhere in the world, where would you go?” was answered by 18 members, three leaders and 11 parents.
Club Days was held March 7 at Timmerman School; project meeting day and record book training was March 22. At 7:45 p.m. on April 3 is 4-H Fun Night at the Emporia Recreation Center. Admission is $5. April 3 is also the Fair Book cover design contest. Registration is being taken now for 4-H camp on June 27-30. Members voted to have a fireworks stand againthis summer.

For Parliamentarian, Nick and Luke Jenkins led the group in playing “Who wants to be a Parliamentarian?” Aubrey Jenkins gave tips about taking photographs for the Photography talk; the Electric talk was given by Melissa, Jennifer and Brent Coats, who talked about different types of wires. For “Other,” Colton Tyler talked about his pet snake, Sammy. Bret Coats played several songs and members guessed names of different prizes for each song. For recreation, Joe Robinson led “Musical Chairs.”
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. April 1 at the Miller United Methodist Church for Parents’ Night. The reporter said “the parents will be running the show.”
