Campaign signs

Steve Corbin of Emporia Open for Business said this morning that there have been no developments in the theft of campaign signs distributed by the organization.

Corbin reported on March 23 that more than 30 of the signs urging a “No” vote on the citywide smoking ban were stolen from yards around Emporia. He said the organization would offer a $500 reward in the case.

No takers so far.

“The police department recovered one (sign),” Corbin said today.

He said signs continue to go missing. A sign in one yard has had to be replaced several times.

A new shipment of the signs is expected today, Corbin said.

The city election is April 7.

Grover scholars

Emporia State University has awarded two Robert J. Grover Graduate Student Scholarships for 2009 to Amy Graves of Holton and Anita Able of Overland Park. This is the first year the scholarship has been available.

Graves is working on her master’s degree in school psychology. Able is pursuing a master’s degree in library science.

Both students will be honored at ESU’s 2009 Research and Creativity Forum on April 8.

When Does Your Activity Become Lobbying?

Alliance for Justice
http://www.afj.org/assets/resources/n...

Most Lobbying is done on the time clock!

RWJF is the political wing of the Johnson & Johnson Company.
Why would J & J fund smoking ban lobbyists to get cigarettes banned?

Johnson & Johnson manufactures or owns Nicoderm, Nicoderm CQ, Nicotrol, Nicorette, and Commit alternative nicotine delivery products. As such, their sole purpose in funding the non-profits to lobby in favor of smoking bans is purely profit motivated. Eliminating the public use of tobacco by way of coerced government legislation (smoking bans), is primarily meant to increase demand for the products J & J sells.

So the next time your local politicians start talking about enacting public policy for the "good of the people", ask yourself do they really mean the "good of the corporation?" or the politician who just stuffed his or her pockets?

No crack, that is wrong. The only reason the majority wanted it, was it was a completely different bill when it was voted on by the Senate, then got changed "slightly"

Yeah...but the majority of Kansas citizens probably want a smoking ban, so ....Keep up the good work, Senator! There’s nothing wrong with being dedicated to do what the people want.

Don't talk for anyone but yourself, cracky! Pretty presumptious of you to assume "majority of Kansas citizens probably want a smoking ban."

Well hello all. Been a while since I posted last, it kind of fell into a grind in here, but here's my two cents. Hiya crack, still spouting off are ya? Question about a post of yours.

"Yeah...but the majority of Kansas citizens probably want a smoking ban, so ....Keep up the good work, Senator! There’s nothing wrong with being dedicated to do what the people want"

These are your words yeah? How many surveys have you recieve from the state, government, or how about just the city council since this whole "propaganda war on smoking", started? One, two? I have recieved none. I have met not one person who has been asked by the city whether THEY, the people of Emporia want this ban. How can you be arrogant and egotistical enough to post as you did when neither you, I or the local, federal, or state legislature has any idea what the people want. You actually have to ask, not just a simple poll on the gazette, but every single emporian, topekan, ect. You cannot, with any honesty, say that you know what the majority of kansans want without asking the kansans. I vote no on the premise of not being approached by anyone from the city council, or cae. I have, however had conversations with S.C. Dixon, Steve Corbin, Matt Slater, and various waiters/resses, bartenders, doormen. None of which tried to "lobby" me, they just asked my opinion.
Dont make anymore false statements when you have no evidence and only your own needs and wants to be carried out. By the way I count your statement as false due to this post.
"Yeah...but the majority of Kansas citizens probably want a smoking ban, so ....Keep up the good work, Senator! There’s nothing wrong with being dedicated to do what the people want"
How are you following what the people want, probably, if you dont know what the people want, probably, because you didnt ask the people what they want, probably. Can you guess why I count your statement as false, probably?
Bye bye, bye bonds!
VOTE NO I will!

On a new subject not related to this ban, anyone else happened to see the anti-smoking messages on the newer movie previews? Also on the rating systems:

This movie is rated pg-13 by the motion picture studios of america. It contains mild language, suggestive behavior, and some smoking.

I'm curious. I understand the ratings for violence, sex, drug use, gore, and language (somewhat), but have cigarrettes now been deemed illegal as drugs, or murder. I must have missed the memo.

I did notice those anti-smoking things a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was odd that smoking didn't show up on movie ratings back when smoking scenes were censored, but all of a sudden they show up now. I am not against the removal of those things, but I do find it odd that smoking is being so suddenly and aggressively targeted. I also thought that the anti-smoking add was a bit over the top, but at least it was only using "education" and not using legislation. This whole thing is so bizarre to me, as people aren't just being taught to avoid it, but are being taught to aggressively hate it. This hatred is then being perpetuated on smokers and I am appalled at this. I have made it clear that I am not a smoker and was never tempted to even try, because the smell of the smoke is unpleasant to me, but I just can't fathom detesting it to the point of hating the person who does it. That is just so outrageous!
