After the storm

Monday, March 30, 2009

Emporia escaped the heavy snowfall that buried parts of western and central Kansas, but the ice and snow storm that battered the city Friday night and Saturday was no walk in the park.

The storm put a heavy load of ice on trees and utility lines and the accompanying high wind did the rest. The storm knocked out power to Allen in north Lyon County and it took utility crews about 24 hours to get the lights back on.

The ice also took a heavy toll on trees around the city, especially on pear trees that were in bloom. The brittle trees with their sharply angled branches are particularly vulnerable to ice damage.

As nasty as the storm was, the thaw that followed was nothing short of amazing. The wind shifted to the south and by mid day Sunday, only traces of snow remained in the gutters and the trees had shed their overcoats of ice.

Road 240 going into Americus from the east also had downed power lines and people were without electircity for over 24 hours. There are still many poles that are leaning and rotting, why don't they replace these instead of waiting until they split in half?

I went to Winfield yesterday. I could tell they had more ice and snow than we did. Snow was still standing in shady spots and every block I went down in Winfield had piles of limbs waiting by the curb for pickup. We should count our blessings that it wasn't worse than it was.

If you see a power pole in poor shape, call your electric company and report it. They may not know about it. They have thousands of poles to keep track of.
