A new specialty business moved in this week in Suite C of the strip mall at 2914 W. Highway 50.
“Mattress Outlet is just a mattress store,” said owner Brad Hase. “It caters to absolutely nothing but sleep.”
The store has been open for several days as workers set up the merchandise displays. It will open officially on Monday, with plans for a grand opening celebration late next month.
The store sits north of Hill’s Appliances, between On-line Communications offices and Carpet & More.
Hase said Mattress Outlet stocks five lines of Spring Air mattresses: Nature’s Rest, Four Seasons, Back Supporters, Chatham & Wells, and the Heritage Collection.
Thirty-two beds were on the display floor at mid-week, with the expectation that nine or 10 more would be added by Friday.
Prices start at $199 for a basic twin bed.
“And they can range all the way up to, right now, $2,800 and everything in between,” Hase said. “...Chatham & Wells can get into the $3,000 range. They are definitely a luxury bed.”
Mattresses come in an assortment of styles, with latex, adjustable beds and specialty content for people conscious about the environment.
“They can go from a little bit green to a whole lot of green,” Hase said. “When I say ‘green,’ they’re made with a whole lot of soybean, for people who are conscious about what they buy.”
The store also carries frames, pillows, mattress covers and spill-resistant liners.
The Spring Air beds have a 10-year warranty, and the Nature’s Rest pillows are warranted for two years.
“So a pillow that has a warranty, that’s kind of awesome,” Hase said. “They’re high-end pillows. They’re not your Walmart $5, $8 specials.”
Store hours will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

Relying on the sale of high-end luxury consumer goods in Emporia, Kansas? It will never happen. This backward burg has a Wal-Mart mentality and always will.

Ouch!
Perhaps it's not the mentality but the wage scale in general. People have budgets.

Create: Point well taken. I suspect you are right. The fact that luxury goods don't sell here is surely created, probably in large part, due to the pathetically low wage scale. I can't imagine a store that sells designer clothing labels or Johnston & Murphy shoes surviving in Emporia. Wages would be one reason, but a prevailing "all U can eat" mentality is another.

I've been in the store, it was awesome to have different styles to lay on to see what felt the best for me. The prices were real competitive and hope to put an order in very soon! They have low end to high end, so it was easy to compare the difference. Support Emporia Buinesses

LOL Bj. 10-4 on the "all you can eat" mentality. Those places always seem to have tons of traffic.

According to steelwool, the new store carries a wide range of quality and price. Momma and I need a new mattress and foundation. We'll check out this place and see if they have an industrial strength unit that will withstand the relentless abuse we inflict upon a bed.

"Oh dear," she said, blushing brightly, "I do believe that is too much information."
