Republican women

The spring meeting of the Santa Fe Trail Republican Women of North Lyon County will be at 1 p.m. April 8 at the Allen Senior Center. Members and visitors are encouraged to wear spring hats. The speakers include Teresa Hurlocker of Emporia, registered nurse and owner and director of At-Home Health Care, who will discuss services in the home and to the counties of Chase, Coffey, Greenwood, Marion, Osage and Lyon. The other speaker will be Joan Lieber, former teacher from Osage City, who will talk about the World War II bombing ranges in the areas of Osage and Lyon counties and the bombing of Reading, “the first Kansas town to be bombed in World War II, as reported in the January 1943 Reading Herald.”

The club continues with the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration which is being held at each meeting during 2009. Members are collecting Lincoln pennies to help with the purchase of two children’s books about Lincoln for Allen Library District 1. Lunch will be available at the senior center by calling Wanda Spade at (620) 528-3414 by noon on April 7.

Opening early

Lyon County’s road and bridge crew finished repair work ahead of schedule on Burlingame Road near 18th Avenue.

County crews replaced tore out and replaced a cross-road culvert between Roads 180 and 190. The road, which had been scheduled to be closed until Tuesday, reopened early Friday afternoon.

Childhood screening

The Flint Hills Special Education Cooperative will be host for a free screening clinic Friday at the Maynard Early Childhood Center, 19 Constitution St. The screening is to assess individuals from birth up to 21 years of age who may have potential learning or developmental problems. Professional personnel from the FHSEC will screen in areas of physical development, vision, hearing, language development, behavior and coordination. For an appointment, call 341-2326.

‘Eggs & Issues’

The Emporia Area Chamber and Visitors Bureau will be host for an “Eggs & Issues” community political forum at 8:30 a.m. April 4 at the Lyon County Courthouse in the Jury Assembly Room, 430 Commercial St. Forums are also scheduled on April 18 at the city conference room No. 1 - west side and May 9, about Emporia Public Schools, at the Mary Herbert Education Center. Coffee and rolls will be served from 8 to 8:30 a.m.

Landscape workshop

The Community Arts Council of Council Grove will sponsor a Residential Landscape Design workshop taught by landscape architect Mary Honeyman of Council Grove, who has been a landscape architect for more than 20 years. The workshop will be evenings of April 9, 16 and 23 held at the Rendezvous in Council Grove. The class size is limited to 15. For more information and registration forms, call Linda K.
