West Highway 50 near the PrairieLand Partners John Deere should soon be safer after a construction project is completed to add lanes making it easier to get into the implement dealership.
A public hearing was held Thursday night to discuss the project, which will be let by the Kansas Department of Transportation in September. Once the Kansas Department of Transportation has taken bids, construction could start by the first part of November, said Chip Woods, Lyon County engineer.
The project, which is estimated to cost about $735,000 and will affect about 2,000 feet of the highway, will start near the bridge west of Road F. In addition to the $735,000, there will be costs associated with inspection, engineering and utility costs. There will be some modification to the guard rail, Woods said. There will be transition/turning lanes added leading to the dealership and Road F will be paved to the dealership. There will be four lanes in the widest spot.
Richard Garber, general manager for PrairieLand Partners, said the project has been embraced by the public, and the location has been good for the dealership, which used to be located next to the Lyon County Fairgrounds.
“We got a lot of new customers because of our location,” Garber said. “We’re having the best year we’ve had in the six years we’ve been in business.”

Hope they do better there than that goofed up round about 3 ring circus they built. That is a terrible area to try and navigate and I live here. I cant imagine out of towners trying to manage figuring out where to go. Heck try and give someone directions through that thing. Do a 3/4 loop, go to the left lane then a 1/2 loop and quickly move back to the right then veer left and your there. Already there has been 1 semi roll over there and believe me there will be many more to come.
