Not a fit?

WITH 650 MILLION Americans jobless across the country, you, Mr. Heermann, don’t think a prepared meals factory would fit the Emporia area?
The unemployed of this area would be standing in line for job applications. Kansas, as you say, does not produce many vegetables but we buy and eat them. I think it’s time for you to re-evaluate your position and welcome any industry that comes to Emporia not just for the privileged class with high levels of skill and education but for those who need employment just to survive today’s economy.

I'm all for people shouting there opinions, but atleast check your facts before you mail it in. The population of the United State is only 303 million, so that would mean none of use have jobs, and that if everyone of us had a kid, they wouldn't have a job. According to the Governments latest released information even with the most recent increases their are only 12.5 million people without jobs. I don't care if you want to sensationalize, but at the Gazette you shouldn't print a letter to the editor that is inaccurate, this will only spread fear in people. So please, read and research before you write.

Wow! She must be counting dead people and their pets too. I am wondering where those opportunities she is talking about for the highly skilled and highly educated people are? She makes it sound like Emporia is nestled in Silicon Valley.

I think the point was that this is an industrial town with a College in it and it seems that some don't want it to be an industrial town anymore (or so it seems). "I am wondering where those opportunities she is talking about for the highly skilled and highly educated people are?" The fact is that there AREN'T many opportunities for the "highly skilled and highly educated people". So why not try to do what we are good at? industry. The college kids can still come and go and look down their noses at all us factory workers and we can still raise our families with the wages we receive from an honest days work. Well I'll let you college educated folks get back to bashing Annette from Hartford now.

I understood what Mr. Heerman meant by his comment on vegetables, and it made sense to me. It's true, we don't produce vegetables in Lyon County; therefore, the cost of producing prepared meals would be driven up because a factory would have to truck in the vegetables used in the meals. The product would be too expensive to produce economically. It makes more sense to have the factory located near the fields that produce vegetables. To illustrate, we have pet food plants here because beef byproducts are used.
For the most part, Lyon County produces soy beans so we have Bunge. Therefore, if a prepared food factory were to open here, may I suggest tofu?
Stop laughing. I'm serious.

Damn liberals. When they took over just two months ago, we had only 10 million people unemployed in the U.S. Now we have 650 million people looking for work. No problem. B.O. and Pelosi will just keep raising my taxes, and yours, until all those folks are housed and fed.
If it weren't for politicans, government employees, union workers, and investment bankers, the entire nation would be unemployed!
(P.S. I didn't realize our population had grown so fast! We really need to close that southern border. If not, we will soon have a billion people here!)

Here is my take on the situation this country has gotten itself into:
This whole scenario has been on the path to this present situation for several decades now and everyone is to blame, not just the liberals, conservatives, Republicans, Democrats, Independents, etc., everyone is to blame. For instance when the politicians and gov't decided to deregulate everything and give the greedy a free hand to rob, pilage, rape and steal the poor and middleclass taxpayers and this country blind, without any rules, regulations, restraints or accountability that was when the oneway, 6 lane, downhill, highway was opened to the present situation in this country ! And I believe that the key word here is " ACCOUNTABILITY ". In the last several decades, noone wanted to be held accountable and noone wanted to enact or enforce accountability measures or transparency measures or wanted to enforce any of these measures. And the sad thing is it is still going on with " TARPS and BAILOUTS " . Only difference is the Gov't is now helping the greedy to do the robbing, pillaging, rapeing and stealing ! Maybe I am wrong, but that is my take on the cause of the present situation in America !

Your not wrong methusla but some of that deregulation was done to "help" the poor in the way of helping them buy things like houses that they couldn't possibly pay for. That's just bad business which is how the government does business, BAD. Right now in this very town we have the government trying to fix a problem with businesses that isn't a problem if the citizens would just use a little commonsense. I'm pretty sure you know what I'm talking about.;) With the financial crisis, if some one has worked at Wendy's for three weeks, commonsense should tell them that they shouldn't buy a $100,000 dollar house. With the lame situation here in Emporia, if some one thinks that something in a certain environment will surely be the death of them, commonsense should tell them don't go there. Simple. You are right we are all to blame because true commonsense has gone by the wayside.

You did it, seriously, you did it, you brought up the you know what! Now we're off and running again. Say, if we vote it down, can we all wear caps that say, "Yes we did" ?

That's a good idea. I try not to bring up that topic unless the conversation is already there but it seems to be consuming and I will be relieved when the vote is over and I can be consumed by more worthy things.
