Why is it every time the National Weather Service says their is freezing precipatation and a modest amount of snow accumalation people in this town and the Eastern half of Kansas FREAK OUT LIKE THE END IS NEAR.
This is nothing compared to what I am used to in Western Kansas where it is not uncommon to see ice storms and tornadoes in the first part of April. Heck I have even been in snow deep enough to bury a car. Get a Grip my fellow Emporians and those that live in Eastern Kansas.

I think we take precautionary measures to keep our children safe. So many of our school districts have rural routes and we feel that the safety of our students is extremely important. So i don't feel that we are acting like its the end of the world, but we are trying to keep our children and citizens safe. Just think if it was your child, would you want the busses to get them home safely or for them to be our traveling on the roads as the weather worsens?????????

jmcmannis, have you driven around emporia after a snow or ice storm? if you need to travel somewhere other than 6th or industrial, you're in for a scary drive!

I agree the roads in Emporia are scary after some snow or ice. Even scarier is some of the drivers! SLOW DOWN AND GIVE OTHER CARS EXTRA SPACE. Last time we had slick roads I got white hair just trying to make it from East and 6th to Market and South. I thought I'd be hit at least 3 times in that short distance. I got my kid from daycare and took South to the edge of town to avoid the crazies on 6th. Once I cleared the city limits, people were driving reasonably.

There were 4 cars in the ditch on a short drive I had to make this afternoon on a rural road. There is no room for error so it's a good thing to get the childred home as early as possible. Better safe than sorry. Obviously these decisions are made to keep people safe because we do live in Kansas where we do have tornadoes, floods, heat waves and ice & snow storms all in one week. We are not left out just because we live on the eastern half.

Better Safe than Sorry. Plus, it's Friday - what's it going to hurt?

Perhaps some people are foolish enough to go out in snow deep enough to bury a car, but most of us would rather be on the safe side. Nothing is so important that it can't be put off for later. Afterall, it's Friday

Actually sg I have. I drove to a winter encampment in Western Arkansas on the Oklahoma border in Dec 2006 after the storm in a Dodge Dakota. But of course I am used to driving on ice, black ice and etc. I was not necessarily talking of keeping the kids safe, heck they should have cancled all classes today.
I actually love driving in this stuff.

Everyone stay safe, Its obvious that jmcmannis doesnt have a family that he needs to worry about other than himself. Sure its fun to go out and joy ride in this stuff but when you have to pick up kids at school and get them home safe the story is diffrent. Besides at ESU there are alot of students who travel here from out of town. Why not make the safest decision for EVERYONE other than the "tuff it out" and hope noone gets hurt route.

jmcmannis, If I wanted to live where the snow is deep enough to bury a car, I would move to western Kansas. You can easily ignore Emporians freaking out about snow and ice.

I am sorry if I pissed people off, I do have family in topeka and a lady friend in the Hartford area.
I just had to chuckle at all the panicking I saw and the folks who dont know how to drive, the streets are not even slick.
I got most of my training driving in this stuff by living in western Kansas and when I was a volunteer with a fire department in kansas city.

For me its a lot of fun and I also chase tornados etc.

Be safe out there, and slow down.
