Street-corner donations

Members of Sigma Sigma Sigma and Sigma Tau Gamma will be raising money for Compeer and the Emporia Public Library from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the corner of 12th Avenue and Commercial Street, where they will ask for donations.

Softball tourneys

The Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity will hold the annual Snowball Softball tournaments Friday and Saturday at the fields on South Avenue. Ten co-ed teams and eight men’s teams will participate in the benefit tournaments, which this year are raising money to buy textbooks for Emporia elementary schools.

Pool play begins at 6 p.m. Friday and continues until 6 a.m. Saturday. Single-elimination tournaments for each group begin at 11 a.m. There is no admission charge. People can make donations directly or by buying concessions.

Last year, the event raised $2,900 for the Emporia Public Library public literacy program. The goal for this year’s textbook campaign is $3,000.

Fish for Lent

Members of the Emporia Knights of Columbus will have the Lenten Fish Fry from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Parish Hall, 102 Exchange St. Diners can choose from three dinners — the “Big Catch,” shrimp creole and the “Smaller Catch.” Meals include hush puppies, potato salad or cole slaw, green beans, dessert and beverage. A child’s menu of cheese pizza or choice of the three dinners will be available. The cost of the dinners range from $6 to $8. The cost is $4 for children younger than 10 years.

Admire carnival

Admire Elementary School is having a carnival, silent auction and spaghetti supper Friday, beginning with the supper from 5 to 7 p.m. at a cost of $5 for adults and $3 for children. The silent auction will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and includes prizes donated by local businesses. The carnival, with games of Twister, basketball and more, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. The Principal Craig Idacavage, gym teacher Tad Hatfield and school counselor Tony Haag have volunteered to sit in the dunk tank and “get wet,” stated the news release. Bingo will be played in the music room with three levels of prizes.

St. James barbecue

The annual Barbecue Beef Sandwich and Bake Sale will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 730 Sylvan St. Barbecued beef sandwiches can be purchased individually for $3. A meal of a sandwich, chips, soda and dessert will cost $5.25 and may be eaten at the church. Meals also are available for carry-out or delivery in Emporia with the purchase of two or more meals to the same address.

Bake sale items include lemon pound cakes ($6.50); cherry or apple cobblers ($8); pecan pies ($7.50) and other foods. Sugar-free cobblers and pies also will be available. The cost is $1.25 each slice. Advance orders can be made by calling 342-8218 or 342-4633 and leaving a telephone number.

Potato bar

American Legion Post 5 will have their annual Potato Bar fundraiser for the Emporia Legion baseball teams from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Post, 2921 W. 12th Ave. Tickets at the door cost $6; $5 in advance; children under 6 years, no charge. Super large potatoes will be served with a variety of toppings, including chili, onions, green peppers, bacon bits, shredded cheese or cheese sauce, broccoli and sour cream. Members of the teams and Legion members are selling tickets. All proceeds will be used to support this year’s baseball program. This year’s goal is $5,000.

Spaghetti for supper

The First Congregational Church will serve the 13th annual Spaghetti Supper from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the church basement, 326 W. 12th Ave. The menu features spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, bread, choice of dessert and beverage for a $6 donation. Children ages 3 through 10 are $3; no charge for children younger than 3 years. Entry is on the west side of the church, and there is an elevator available.
