Safety partners

Hill’s Pet Nutrition has taken on some partners in building the new Hill’s Dry Pet Food plant in Emporia. The U.S. Department of Labor said in a news release this week that its Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Kansas Department of Labor’s division of Industrial Safety and Health and contractors on the project are working with Hill’s toward the goal of creating and maintaining a worksite free of worker injuries and illnesses. Other partners are Austin Building and Design and Kajima Building and Design.

The news release said the partnership will serve as a model to subcontractors and others by demonstrating how to implement a strong safety and health program on a large, multi-employer work site. It also encourages a higher level of participation in the safety process by involving everyone on the job site.

Changes at refuge?

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering revising the Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge Comprehensive Conservation Plan by eliminating bait collection and camping on the refuge. The service is interested in the public’s perspective on these proposed changes.

To receive further information about this issue or to participate in the revision process by providing your opinion, contact: Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge, P.O. Box 128, Hartford, KS 66854; phone (620) 392-5553; fax (620) 392-5554; or go online to http://flinthills.fws.gov.

The Service will conduct a public comment meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. April 1 at the Hartford Community Center on Commercial Street. Comments may also be mailed, e-mailed, or called to the refuge staff at the number above.
