The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering revising the Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge Comprehensive Conservation Plan by eliminating bait collection and camping on the refuge. The service is interested in the public’s perspective on these proposed changes.
To receive further information about this issue or to participate in the revision process by providing your opinion, contact: Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge, P.O. Box 128, Hartford, KS 66854; phone (620) 392-5553; fax (620) 392-5554; or go online to http://flinthills.fws.gov.
The Service will conduct a public comment meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. April 1 at the Hartford Community Center on Commercial Street. Comments may also be mailed, e-mailed, or call the refuge staff at the number above.

I can see eliminating bait collection, but to deny people the ability to camp out is not needed.

On their site it says the refuge is owned by the Army Corp of Engineers. Unfortunately it doesn't go on to say the corp of engineers is owned by us the taxpaying citizens of this country. If we cannot use the public land for camping etc, why should our tax dollars go to maintain it? If they cut us off we should cut their funding by a reciprocal amount. I think the wages of all those involved in restricting taxpayer use of the land further would be about the right amount of funding cuts.

Is this liberal environmentalism running amok? The refuge is a beautiful and peaceful area that more people should take advantage of, and equally important, public property. I've camped, fished, and been a part of picnics there for many, many years. This is a crazy proposal that should be withdrawn. Is this proposal a disguised forerunner to closing off the refuge to public access altogether? Hopefully our Kansas Congressional Delegation will get involved, and help get this proposal stopped.

I encourage everyone who is concerned
about the continued lockdown of the refuge to attend the public meeting.
We need all the help we can get to stop
the Refuge office from keeping the public completely out of the refuge area.
Anyone, even if you do not reside in Hartford.
Thanks!
