Coffey Co. man sentenced for sex crime

Monday, March 23, 2009

A former Coffey County resident was sentenced Thursday to more than five years in prison for his conviction on a charge of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

Coffey County District Judge Phillip M. Fromme sentenced Michael L. Klassen, 39, of Bronson, to a 61-month prison sentence for his conviction on the charge in January.

Aggravated indecent liberties is a Level 3, person felony.

Coffey County Attorney Doug Witteman filed charges in October after an investigation by the Coffey County Sheriff’s office. The complaint indicated the act had occurred in June 2008, when the victim was 15 years old.

“This is yet another example of a disturbing trend we have been seeing more of in the past few years,” Witteman said. “There should be little tolerance for those that have been entrusted with the care of a child and instead violate that trust by sexually exploiting that child.”
