Concert, Art Exhibit

Concert

Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 101 Cottonwood St., becomes a concert venue on Wednesday night for a group of Emporia State musicians. Anna Ryan, Terrisa and Gary Ziek and Marie Miller will perform at “Great Spaces Great Music” beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The free public concert will feature a range of musical selections, Ryan said, from Gershwin show tunes to a baroque aria to jazz and folk music.

“It’s a hodge-podge of all our favorite types of music,” Ryan said.

Art exhibit

The Emporia Arts Council presents Casey Wilson Photography through March 27 at the Emporia Arts Center, 618 Mechanic St. For more information, call 343-6473.

Symphony preview

A Prelude to the Symphony in the Flint Hills 2009 with an ensemble from the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra will be performed from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Granada Theatre. Light refeshments will be served. There also will be a drawing for the June 13 Symphony in the Flint Hills. (must be present to win). The tickets for the Prelude are free while they last and are available at the Emporia Gazette, ESB Financial, Emporia Area Chamber and Visitors Bureau and the Emporia Arts Center (limit four each person). The fourth annual Symphony in the Flint Hills will be held on a private ranch near Florence.

Missoula troupe

Auditions for the Missoula Children’s Theatre production of “The Princess and the Pea” will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. March 30 at the Emporia High School. Those auditioning are asked to arrive early to register; the auditions will begin promptly at 4:30 p.m.

Some cast members will be asked to stay for a first rehearsal beginning at 6:45 p.m. that night. Rehearsals will be conducted all that week from 4:30 to 8:45 p.m. each day at the high school. The show will be performed at 7 p.m. April 3 and 2 p.m. April 4.

All students, kindergarten through 12th grade, are encouraged to audition. There is no guarantee everyone who auditions will be cast. Besides acting parts, assistant directors will be cast to assist with the technical aspects of the production.

The children’s theater program is sponsored by the Emporia Arts Council with support from Bank of America, John North Ford and Emporia Public Schools. For information, call the arts council at 343-6473.
