Wow, times have changed. When I lived in that neighborhood you got a shrug when you reported something stolen. I had my tag stolen off my car and had to install a locking gas cap since gas was siphoned off regularly. I had someone try to break in my apartment and was told, it was probably a drunk and he got where he was wanting to go. Sure, a drunk carefully tries to work at your doorknob. I can hope they were trying to reassure me but I was disgusted. I have to give Chief Smith credit for trying to clean Emporia up. It's way overdue.

"I can hope they were trying to reassure me..." they, whoever they were, could have been honest and told you
that *at best* there are only 5 cops on the streets to cover the entire city (whatever the number it includes the supervisor) and try as they might, they can't be everywhere all the time. Don't you think someone up to no good is smart enough to hide when that car with the markings and light bar comes by? Makes it tougher to catch the bad guy huh? Geez, give them a break. I'm sorry you had the thefts but even the U.S. Supreme Court determined the "police" have no responsibility to protect the individual but to protect the public at large. Still disgusted or did the cold hard facts make you feel better?

I was referring to the attitude of the Emporia police if you lived in certain areas of Emporia. If you lived east of Exchange or south of South Ave. you were on your own for the most part. We called on noisy neighbors and they would generally send a cop out within an hour. We called to complain that a neighbor was smoking pot out on the walkway by our a/c unit and we never got a response. After 90 minutes of so of sweltering because we had to turn the a/c off to avoid the fumes, we gave up and went to the mall. We don't think a cop ever showed up to investigate. Everyone knew where the crack houses were but there never seemed to be any raids on them. I didn't expect the cops to catch the person but I felt like they were very condescending. Funny thing is, I had a similar incident while living on Merchant street and that officer was very concerned. It may have been because there was obvious damage to the door and it was a younger cop. I don't know for sure. I'm not blaming the cops for not being everywhere but I did notice a difference in attitude when I lived in different parts of Emporia.

poet, I don't know about the SO but the last I knew, the PD had a Ride-Along program where a citizen might be able to ride with an officer for a time. I suggest you look into this for a few hours on a hot summer night. Try to make it during a full moon.
