Who to blame

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

IT IS an inconvenient truth. Two Commissioners, Johnson and Kessler, voted to take away your rights to choose for the convenience of their friends not to have to choose. The first place to stop Big Government is locally here in Emporia. Vote NO on the Smoking Ban Question.

I am a smoker and have no problem with the current smoking ban policy already in effect in Emporia. I agree with smoking being barred from public buildings, schools, offices, retail stores, and interior spaces where people are REQUIRED to congregate.

My problem is with the overly-restrictive ban attempting to be rammed down our throats under false pretenses, lies, fearmongering, and Gestapo tactics by a small group of self-serving nicotine narco-nannys intent on dictating law where people CHOOSE to congregate, such as bars, private clubs, and hotel rooms.

Have you read the text of the proposed ban? It is over the top to the point of being far more punitive than comprehensive. It has little to do with health and a lot to do with prejudice and intolerance. It creates social classes, division, and forces our fire fighters to become nicotine narcs and drug enforcement agents.

If this ban is allowed to become law it will create far more problems and misery than it claims to cure. It will directly affect lives, incomes, jobs, rights, personal freedoms, tax revenues, and tourist (visitor) dollars for our city. It will create hardships for the disabled and elderly and force young women to "step outside" into dark alleys and parking lots in the middle of the night to have a smoke with their drink. The ban will also bring the smoke outside onto sidewalks and store fronts instead of confining it to the privacy of a building. How will that keep the anti-smoking advocates from exposing themselves and their children to the second-hand smoke they claim to so drastically fear?

Worst of all, this ban prevents combat veterans, the men and women who sacrificed to preserve our rights and freedoms, the right and freedom to enjoy a good cigar or cigarette in the confines of their own private club, like the VFW. They fought and died for our freedom and CAE seeks to take away those freedoms in order to appease their need to control lives and dictate behavior.

This ban is only the beginning. Warlord Walters, CAE, Crackinsack, and the other overly-self important advocates of this unnecessary attempt at legislating morality and personal choice, won't stop here. Next they will seek to ban smoking anywhere in the city limits, the county, and the state, including your car and home. When they finish ridding their perfect world of smelly smokers, who knows what they will go after. Maybe fat people, large dogs, drinkers, or undesirables who drive cars they don't approve of. We may someday have to stand outside of McDonald's, ten feet from the door, to eat a double quarter-pounder!

This smoking ban isn't about health. It is about choice, rights, tolerance, common sense, and good ol' fashioned American, worth dying for, "Give me liberty or give me death", "Don't tread on me", freedom.

This is a door we can't afford to open. Once opened, it can never again be closed.

Vote "NO" on April 7.

"You'll still be able to choose, Roy. Your choice will be between not smoking and taking it outside so you don't harm us. You are losing no rights and we're all gaining a brighter future."

Hmmm. So Roy should be forced to make difficult decisions that you dictate, such as fighting withdrawal or standing in the rain to smoke, while you have to make no choices at all. Good plan, Crack... for your selfish, intolerant, bigoted self.

"People need to get it out of their heads that smoking is beneficial and/or cool. It’s not and it certainly ain’t worth fighting for."

Gee. I thought you smoking ban bigots said this was a health issue. Whoops!

"Smoking is not being banned."

No, just smokers; and personal freedoms and choices.

"Harming others with your smoke is being banned."

That is your personal deluded opinion and rationalization for infringing on the rights of others. If you are not where I am, how am I harming you? You have that choice. Use it instead of taking away my option to choose.

You are an intolerant bigot, Crack. You use lies, distortions, fear, and totally inane logic to try and force your deluded view of the world and selfish values upon others. Stop peeing on my leg and trying to convince me it is raining.

Vote "NO" on April7!!!

Crack: You just don't get it and lack sufficient intellect to ever get it. YOU have the choice to stay out of bars that allow smoking or the hand full of restaurants that allow it. All other buildings in Emporia are all ready smoke free. We all have choices, for now, but you want to take away the rights of others while maintaining all of your options.

I stand by what I said. You are a selfish, intolerant, bigot. Oh! And incapable of seeing the real issue in this debate.

First they regulate this smoking ban....what's next ?

This is stupid people. If a privately owned business is a "smoking" business and you don't like smoking, then take your money somewhere else. Why is it your mission to dictate for anyone else? If you don't want to be around shs, don't go where you know you will be exposed to it. Aren't we regulated enough now ?

If you go more often then you'll probably consume more alcohol and shorten your life that way. Maybe the shs is helping you not drink as often and is actually improving your health. Maybe if the ban goes into affect you will drink so much more that your liver will fail and then you'll curse the day you voted for the ban. So think of your liver and vote NO.

I agree with Bjnemp this ban the way it was proposed is basically taking away the smokers rights. You non smokers have a choice whether to go in a bar or restuarant that smokes just like a smoker has the choice if they want to go in a bar or resturant that is non smoking but to tell them this is the way it is and its this way or you get fined is taking away the rights of the citizens and of the men and women who are and had served our country for our freedom of choice on many issues. Teresa Walters and her committee is just trying to be a big shot. Thinks it makes her big in this town. But all it is being is that we are being told how to live when to live and where to live. Are we living in Nazi Germany time period again? It sure is looking that way!

Come on non-smokers, he can't pay the rent with waiting for you dollars. And joe I don't think you'll see ole cracky, she will tell you she couldn't get past all those nasty smokers out front to get inside. Let's get off the bar talk for a while.

This ban covers Motels and Bed & Breakfasts also.
Absolutely NO smoking rooms allowed in Emporia.

Your lawyer or bookeepers office-no smoking allowed
Your mechanic shop-no-smoking allowed.

You Avon ladies or Home Decore or Amway dealers who have customers pick up orders in your house-no smoking allowed. & the ordinance reads no-smoking during or after business hours.

home based day care, not only while the kids are there, (which is a good idea), but even after mom & dad picks the kids up and the day care provider is just relaxing in their own living room.

ANY BUILDING IN EMPORIA KANSAS.

So let me get this straight... You all cry and whine and complain to the city commission that you want bars to be non-smoking. A bar turns non-smoking, and then you don't go to it, because you like the "atmosphere" of other bars?

I thought that was the reason you didn't go to all the other bars in the first place, was because of the "atmosphere."

I don't know how else to say this, but right now, you all sound pretty damn stupid to me.

OutsiderJ (anonymous) says...

Crack,
In all seriousness, as an olive branch you might say, I would encourage you and your crew to go to the Noose. I have been there many times (before they went non-smoking.) Friendly atmosphere, nice comfortable chairs, a snooker table for crying out loud. Amenities like that are hard to find in bars. And for the ecclectics in your bunch there is even art on the walls, and if you are so inclined you could buy some of it and put it up on your walls as reminder that you made a choice to go to a place that suited your needs and catered to your preferences.

If that ain't enough, they used to have free juke box hours on certain nights of the week. I ain't talkin' bout no push B5 juke box either. I'm talking you can download the most obscure of your favorites and listen to them over a nice cold PBR or mixed drink (since they are a full service bar, unlike the blind).

Give it a try, you might find a place to call your regular haunt. It may also give you a chance to sit, think, and reflect. After your reflection, you may even find that the status quo and capitalism make for a pretty good solution to the problem. Hell, you may even make some new friends, some of the regulars there are a real hoot!

"If I am only supposed to go to smoke-free places, I have lost my freedom to go where I please."

YES! I think you FINALLY get it! Yes, you WILL have lost your freedom to go where you please! We have been saying this since the onset of this whole shenanigan!

Here's what you and the other ban-nuts don't get. What you say about the employees and customers at other bars being exposed to SHS, you are ASSUMING they mind. They don't. You don't work at a bar, or go to a bar, to be healthy. It's not a health club! You have stated on here many times that Steve doesn't know his employees, and that they are really against the ban, but won't say so to his face. Have you ever asked them? Has the CLean Air People (the CLAP) ever asked them?

NO!!!! You just assume that because you don't like something that is POSSIBLY bad for you, that everyone doesn't like it. Most people who go to a bar just flat-out don't care. Those that do are free to leave at any time.

That is what is most aggravating to me is the people that are pushing so hard for this ban never go to bars, and if the ban passes, will continue to not go to bars, even though they promised they would. The Noose is a PRIME example of that!

Why should all bars in Emporia have to conform to you? Why can't a couple of non-smoking bars be good enough? Does every business in town have to cater to you?

March 20, 2009 at 10:07 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

seriouslyfolks (anonymous) says...

People that go into a smokey bar voluntarily bring any harm that might come on themselves PERIOD! Only adults are allowed in bars and as adults they have been bombarded with information about the dangers of both smoking and to a lesser degree alcohol(I say lesser degree to the education on the topic not the danger because drinking is more socially accepted and people are less likely to point out it's dangers). These are informed adults making informed decisions, they are not victims even if they cry like they are.

If you drink less because you stay at a bar less because there is smoke in the are, aren't you actually doing less harm to your body then if you stayed and drank for hours. Do you love your lungs and hate your liver? Is that it?

Please vote NO!

A little on the lighter side. I think most of us know what happens when you get a bunch of good ole boys and gals together in a bar downing some beers ! In a little while there is going to be an abundent amount of, to be civil, beer gas released and I think we all know what a stink that can raise.
So just because some delicate nosed person in the bar at the time doesn't appreciate the smell, they leave and a few days later a petition is presented to the City Commissioners by the BBBFC to ban beer flatulence in all the bars and the patrons who have to release butt gas will have to go out side and release standing at the curb with their butts pointed at the street or face a fine and 30 days incarceration in an outhouse ! These power and control minded people not only want to control our/your individual lives but they also want to control the private businesses and private business owners !
And as you can see by cracks and other smoking ban advocates statements. These people absolutely want to control what certain people can do and where they can do it. However the smoking ban people absolutely do not want to be controlled or have to make a choice at all, in any way shape or form !

After all we all can't be like you and irishemporia are, who never belittle, insult, degrade or call anyone names or say that everything a person posts on this thread is nothing but, and I quote, " CRAP " , no sir not all of us can be like that !

Anyone and everyone is and are more righteous than you and your buddy . Who, by the way are the first to insult, degrade, insinuate, cast aspersions or disparaging remarks upon anyone who happens to disagree with them or post any info that they feel is not worthy, or as one put it " ignorant and " Nothing but CRAP. " And then when a person gets fed up with their, or at least ones continued, to use his word " CRAP " and retaliates with a strong and belittling comment, they get all upset and label that person, me in this case a bigot and racist.
Seriouslyfolks, I am sorry that you have gotten involved in this and don't deserve what may come your way, because of it.
I have said before and I will say it again now. I will not apologize for retaliating in like kind or worse, especially when I am attacked first and repeatedly by anyone ! However I will try to not lower myself to their level again. That is unless I get fed up with their/his continued pushing of the issue, but I will try very hard not to respond to any attacks by these two !

Tell you what, Meth, Rbow, et. al: There is not much point to name calling, questioning sexual preference or forging someone's user name.

From now on, you can take on the role of personal attacker. I don't see the point, and refuse to participate anymore. My apologies to anyone and everyone whom I have insulted.

From now on, I'll post what I believe to be relevant information regarding SHS. The rest is a waste of time.

Feel free to attack my posts, feel free to attack me, feel free to attack my service. I've faced much tougher crowds than this.

It was crackinback and her crew that first tried ripping off user names in order to gain support through deceit. Let's not do the same thing and stoop to their pathetic, low-class and desperate level.

Any way the count of stolen signs is now at 29 and a police report has been filed. We are contacting crime-stoppers mon. a.m. to post the $500.00 reward. Why were the yellow signs stripped in block after block while the green signs remained? Makes one think that perhaps COMMITTEE FOR A HEALTHIER EMPORIA has a few crackpots working in their behalf. They haven't even banned our rights yet and they are taking away our right to free speech.

All I and all or most all of the other smoking ban opponents have ever tried to do on these threads is post what we have believed was and still believe is relevant information about SHS and other equally hazardous materials, one is exposed to every day of our lives and what we believe is the real issue behind this unnecessary and overly restrictive smoking ban !

I find it ironic that these people trying to make new laws are breaking existing laws by stealing these signs.
