Sears celebrates new name

Sears has changed the name of its retail stores. Now known as Sears Hometown Stores, the 900 locations have a new name that “better represents what we are to our customers,” Will Powell, Sears president said in a news release.

To mark the occasion, Sears Hometown Stores have set aside this month for a “welcoming” promotion that includes a sweepstakes and the giveaway of a Kenmore appliance package.

Sears Hometown Stores carry well-known Sears brands, such as Craftsman, Kenmore and DieHard, as well as assorted national brands, including Lands’ End, Jaclyn Smith and Martha Stewart Everyday.

Noted author speaks

Teachers from the Lebo-Waverly and Southern Lyon County school districts and staff members from Emporia State University joined about 200 educators to hear an award-winning children’s author and illustrator.

Carmen Deedy, author of “The Yellow Star: The Legend of King Christian X of Denmark,” was the guest author at the 11th annual Kansas Reading Recovery and Early Literacy Conference, which met on March 2. Deedy’s latest work, “Martina the Beautiful Cockroach: A Cuban Folktale,” has received the Pura Belpre Award for its representation of the Latino cultural experience.

The keynote speaker for the event was Debbie Miller, a nationally known reading expert.

Donna Arndt represented the Southern Lyon County district at the conference; Linda Born and Nancy Johansen represented from the Lebo-Waverly district.

Deborah Larson and Melissa Reed from Emporia State University also attended.

EVCO sets food show

EVCO Wholesale Food Corp. will take over the William Lindsay White Auditorium on Wednesday for its annual food show, an invitation-only event for current and prospective customers of the Emporia company.

Using the theme “EVCO Space Odyssey!” the show offers customers the opportunity to meet with vendors, attend operator seminars and sample products. EVCO provides food products for institutional kitchens such as schools, hotels, health-care centers and restaurants.

Training in tanning

Morgan Ellis of Trend Centre has completed a First Impressions Certification Course offered by the International Smart Tan Network.

The course is designed to provide technical and service knowledge to indoor-tanning operators. The certification requires an operator to be knowledgeable in all facets of salon presentation, emphasizing cleanliness and sanitation procedures, according to a news release.
