Rural girls cap 24-1 season with State championship

Washburn Rural’s girls finished their run to the Class 6A State title with a 57-47 win over Olathe South on Saturday at White Auditorium.

Rural (24-1) jumped out to a 22-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and won despite being outscored 40-35 from there. Junior Maggie Holmberg led the Junior Blues with 16 points and also grabbed six rebounds.

Senior post LaSharra Riley had 12 points and nine rebounds, and senior Paige Ladenburger, an Emporia State softball signee, had 11 points. Alexa Bordewick had eight, including two 3-pointers. The Junior Blues shot 53 percent from the floor and held Olathe South to 41 percent.

Natalie Knight led Olathe South with 17 points.

Wichita Heights boys 73, Wichita Southeast 58

Austin Bahner’s 19 points led three players in double figures, and freshman Perry Ellis pulled down 20 rebounds as Wichita Heights jumped out to a 37-21 lead at halftime and won the Class 6A boys crown.

Bahner finished 6-of-9 from the floor and hit all three of his 3-pointers and all four of his free throws. He also had three assists and two steals.

Dorrian Roberts had 17 points and threw in three 3-pointers, and Dreamius Smith added 10 points. Thanks to Ellis’ boardwork, Heights outrebounded Southeast 49-36.

Joe Mitchell led Southeast with 26 points, and Ronald Cobb had nine.

Curran Darling’s jumper at the buzzer with the game tied gave the Shawnee Mission East boys third place with a victory over Shawnee Mission Northwest.

The shot was Darling’s only field goal. Winn Clark led the Lancers with 12 points, and Marcus Webb had 11. For Northwest, Steave Carver had 21 points and nine rebounds, and A.J. Spencer had 17 points.

Shawnee Mission West salvaged third place behind 22 points and 15 rebounds from Brooke Katterhenry. Katterhenry went 7-of-14 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the foul line to lead the Vikings to the victory. Lizzy Jeronimous added 11 for West.

Kamisha Richard had 16 points for Wichita Heights, and Allegria Chisholm had 10.
