Hornet baseball beats Fort Hays
The 13th-ranked Emporia State baseball team took the opener of a weekend home series against Fort Hays State on Friday, 5-1.
Ben Graham pitched a three-hit complete game for the Hornets, earning his third win of the season. Mike Sharp hit a homer and drove in two runs for ESU, and Kenny Burkhead also drove in two and went 2-for-3.
ESU and Fort Hays return to Glennen Field today for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
ESU softball loses, 8-4
A seven-run second inning for Southwestern Oklahoma State doomed the Emporia State softball team, which lost 8-4 on Friday in the AAUW Softball Showcase at the Trusler Sports Complex.
Miranda Campbell and Aubree Brattin hit home runs for the Hornets. Campbell’s homer was her second of the season, Brattin’s her first.
Megan Dennis relieved a struggling Jennifer Heerey in the second inning and gave up three of the seven second-inning runs, then settled down for a four-run, six-inning relief outing, striking out seven and walking one.
The Hornets return to action for two games today, hosting Augustana at 1:30 p.m. and Southwest Baptist in a 6:30 p.m. nonconference game.
