Madison

The Eureka Herald reported that Jordan Himes is the Greenwood County Spelling Bee Champion and Lydia McEwen is the runner-up following the bee last week. Jordan is an eighth-grader at Eureka Junior Senior High School and Lydia is a Hamilton sixth-grader. The competition went 13 rounds with Jordan correctly spelling “spontaneous.”

Cottonwood Falls

The Chase County Leader-News reported that at their March 2 meeting, the Cottonwood Falls City Council voted to reimburse lifeguards for training in the amount of $150 and approved the purchase of a new 14-foot diving board at the city pool.

New Strawn

The Coffey County Republican reported that Allen Community College will cease operating its Health Care Academy from the New Strawn building due to a downturn in the economy and decreased enrollment. The college will terminate its lease on June 30.
