Emporian Meg Detwiler placed fourth this morning in the regional spelling bee in Topeka.
The sixth-grader at Lowther North Intermediate School was one of 48 spellers from 26 counties in northeast Kansas who vied for the right to compete in the national bee in Washington D.C.
Also competing in the regional bee was Gabriel O'Connor, an eighth-grader at Neosho Rapids. Both Meg and Gabriel earned their spots by placing first and second, respectively, in the Lyon County Spelling Bee last month.
Meredith Foulke, a seventh-grader from Overbrook, won the regional bee, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal, which sponsors the event.
