Emporia State survives with an OT win

CANYON, TEXAS — Emporia State beat St. Mary’s 78-75 in overtime on Friday night to move onto the second round of the South Central Regional.
The Lady Hornets led by three with 4.4 seconds left in regulation and St. Mary’s had the ball on the sideline. Natalie Gamez took the inbound pass and banked in a 3-pointer to force overtime.
Emporia State trailed by three in overtime and Lacy Corker scored to take a 74-73 lead. Ashton Benford gave St. Mary’s back the lead with a putback. Cassondra Boston gave ESU back the lead with what ended up being the go-head basket.
Ida Edwards scored 20 points and had 17 rebounds to lead Emporia State. Boston scored 15 points and Lacy Corker added 12. For complete coverage of Friday's game, check Saturday's Gazette.

CANYON, TEXAS — Emporia State and St. Mary’s are tied at 29 at halftime.
A tie didn’t seem likely after St. Mary’s opened the game by taking a 16-2 lead. Emporia State answered with a 27-9 run to take the lead. St. Mary’s ended the half on a 4-0 run to bring us to halftime.
The Lady Hornets had seven turnovers in the first 6 minutes, 16 seconds and didn’t shoot much better, shooting 1-for-8 in that time.
Emporia State’s balanced scoring helped lead the comeback. Ida Edwards leads ESU with six points. She also has two fouls and sat the final 7:27.
Both Jamie Augustyn and Brittney Miller have five points off the bench. Farren Fox leads the Rattlers with seven points.
Emporia State is shooting 35.5 percent and has nine turnovers. St. Mary’s is shooting 31.3 percent.
