Olpe upset in 2A

Thursday, March 12, 2009

MANHATTAN — In recent memory, losing isn’t something the boys at Olpe High School have been accustomed to.

During the 2008 football season, the Eagles lost only one game — a state championship tilt against perennial powerhouse Smith Center. That winning tradition continued into the 2008-09 basketball season as Olpe coasted to a perfect 23-0 regular season.

“This is the first time we’ve ever gotten to the State tournament undefeated,” said Olpe coach Chris Schmidt. “I couldn’t be happier with this group of kids. The seniors led us through a great season.”

Unfortunately, the team’s bid for perfection came up short in the Class 2A State tournament, as the Eagles dropped a 44-35 decision to defending champion Pittsburg-Colgan in Wednesday’s first round at Bramlage Coliseum.
