Cinco royalty

The Las Casitas Association is looking for contestants for the L’il King and Queen Pageant at the 11th Annual Cinco De Mayo Celebration on May 9 and 10. Contestants must be between the ages of 6 and 10 by March 1. Those who wish to participate should call Amanda Rodriguez for more information at 340-3258 or 344-5430 by Monday to register. The Pageant is open to children ages 6-10 years, regardless of race.

Looking for classmates

The addresses are needed for these classmates from the EHS class of 1959: Gary Barrons, Judy Nutterfield Campbell, Robert Crabtree, Donna Henning Duker, Tima Browning Hush, Jim Massoth, Lester Palmer, Robert Repp, Sharon Dreasher Shannon, Patricia Matthews Wagner and Connie Ward Hart. The class will have their reunion on Sept. 12.

SOS advocate training

SOS advocates are needed to answer the helpline, provide support to adults and children, sort donations, assist in the office or help with special projects. SOS orientation and advocacy training programs will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 27 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 28. Training and instruction are provided for all volunteer positions. SOS is also looking for bilingual individuals who want to volunteer as advocates. A $10 administration fee is requested to complete background checks and screenings on each volunteer. Call the volunteer coordinator at 342-7943 for more information and to register for training.

Quilting Day

March 21 is National Quilting Day. In commemoration of the day, the Emporia Regional Quilters’ Guild has put together three downtown demonstrations, “Quilting on Commercial” from 1 to 3 p.m. At 915 Commercial St, there will be “Long Arm Quilting with Cowell Custom Quilting”; 911 Commercial St, “Machine Embroidery with Prairie Pieces Quilt Shop”; and “Reproduce Fabric From a Computer with Sarah Wallace.”

Driving program

The AARP Driver Safety Program will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 402 Commercial St. The cost of the course is $14 each person with a $2 discount for AARP members. There are no age or membership requirements. The course is a “pleasant mix of video and trained volunteer instructor presentations,” state the news release. All automobile insurance companies must offer a discount on your present auto insurance premium for participating in this eight-hour course. For the discount, participants must have their member number. For more information, call instructor Jerry Marshall at 342-5841.
