Minimal damage was done in a fire Monday afternoon at 713 Chestnut.
A structure fire was called in at 3:50 p.m. Monday. Emporia Fire Marshal Tom Andrews said the fire was on the home’s front porch and is being ruled a result of discarded smoking materials. The fire caused about $50 in damage.

I agree with Crack here. Starting a fire with a dropped cigarette isn't an accident; it's a reckless act. I think we need to start holding smokers accountable for their actions. Fortunately, no one was hurt and the damage was only $50 in this case. Although...who is paying for those firefighters? All of us! Why should we have to pay for someone else’s negligence? Oh, that's right, because they are smokers and we should accommodate their addiction because it's their "right".

Do littering laws apply to one's own personal property? It was on the porch, not the ground, so...................
Also, the damage was to their own property and to their own pocketbook as insurance will probably not touch this due to personal culpability and deductible(which it won't even count toward if the first one applies).
As far as paying for the firefighters, how about we pay for an ambulance for you someday when your liver, heart and arteries have had enough beer and shut down on you. Then can we taxpayers call it even? Or we could send fire out to help you when your barbecue grill gets out of hand or you didn't get you chimney cleaned well enough (wait, that one might not be negligence since I know a firefighter that has happened to, but the others are--got to keep in the same fruit group and all) or a car wreck where you were at fault or any other number of preventable things you may need fire and rescue for. You are allowed one human mistake now to keep things even, but it must not hurt anyone or damage someone else's property or cost anyone (including insurance) any amount over what this call cost the city this time. K?
