Olpe boys win substate, undefeated season continues

Monday, March 9, 2009

Olpe’s dream season will continue this week in Manhattan, as the undefeated Eagles are headed to the Class 2A State tournament as the top seed.

With Josh Klumpe’s 19-point, seven-rebound effort leading four players in double figures, Olpe cruised to a 59-41 win over West Elk in its substate final at Udall, running its record to 23-0. The Eagles will face eighth-seeded Pittsburg-Colgan, the defending Class 2A State champions, in first-round action Wednesday at Bramlage Coliseum.

Olpe continued its recent trend of getting off to a big start, with two threes by Matt Redeker and one by Bradley Argabright helping the Eagles forge a 19-8 lead at the end of the first. They led 35-16 at half, with Klumpe notching eight of his points in the second period.

West Elk cut the Eagles’ lead to 14 early in the fourth quarter, but Olpe began finding Klumpe for finishes inside, as he added eight points in the final quarter. Defensively, guards Argabright and Ethan Hall harassed West Elk’s leading scorer, Taylor Lowe, who finished with just seven points.

Argabright had 15 points, Cole Krueger had 13 and Matt Redeker had 10. Krueger also had seven rebounds and seven assists.

“He got the ball a lot, and they kind of doubled and left Josh open,” Olpe coach Chris Schmidt said. “Josh’s man was coming to double, and he found Josh quite a bit. So he did a good job, and Bradley was a big part of the game. They didn’t really have anybody that could stay in front of him, so he was able to penetrate and cause a lot of havoc for the defense, and that allowed us to get some other kids some pretty good looks.”

Olpe will meet Colgan (16-7) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“Their record’s not as flashy as it always has been, but they’ve played a lot of big schools, and it’s going to be a challenge for us, of course,” Schmidt said. “But at this time of year, we think everybody will be, and I think there’s eight pretty good teams there.”

The winner of the Olpe-Colgan matchup will take on the winner between Berean and Nemaha Valley, who are slated to tip off at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday. On the other side of the bracket, second-seeded Syracuse plays Sacred Heart at 3 p.m., and Trego plays St. Marys at 4:45 p.m.

Crest took a commanding 21-point lead into the fourth quarter, outscoring Madison 14-3 in the third.

“What made me more proud of this team was we did not roll over,” Brown said. “We made a nice run in the fourth quarter and got the lead down to 10 points but time was a factor, and with the experience that Crest had, we came up a little short.”

Michael Luthi led the Bulldogs with 11 points in his final high school game.
