Flint Hills Beef Fest results released

The Flint Hills Beef Fest announced the winners of the 2008 Flint Hills Beef Fest Feedlot and Carcass Contests that were recognized at the Winter Awards Banquet held Sunday, February 8, 2009. For the 2008 contests, there were 58 separate contestants or entities that entered pens of 3 head of steers or heifers in the summertime grass futurity, with the majority of them carrying on to the feedlot and carcass contests recently concluded.

Eighty-nine heifers were individually weighed and shipped from Royal Beef at Scott City on Dec. 17, 2008, to National Beef in Dodge City, where carcass data was collected. Average daily gain in the feedlot for the heifers was 3.83 pounds per day. The average dressing percentage for the pen was 64.3 percent. A USDA Quality Grade of Choice went to 67 of the 89, with 2 Prime and 20 Select. Seventy-six of the 89 head were yield grade 3 or higher, with 12 yield grade 4’s and one yield grade 5.

On Jan. 7 the process was repeated for the 98 head in the steer contest. Average daily gain on the pen was 3.74 pounds per day, with a dressing percentage of 64 percent. There were 56 steers with a quality grade of Choice, with 40 Select. Yield grades were good, with 93 Yield Grade 3 or better and only 5 Yield Grade 4.

The top placings for steers in the feedlot contest and average daily gains were: 1) Spring Creek Ranch — Joe and Debbie Reinert, Cassoday, KS, 4.77 pounds per day; 2) Darbyshire Farms, LLC — Dennis, Mike and Kevin Darbyshire, Hartford, 4.43; 3) Anderson Ranch — Matt, Julia and Mark Anderson, Alma, 4.42; 4) Woodbury Farms — Howard, John and Fred Woodbury, Quenemo, 4.34; 5) Darby ETC — Emily, Tammy and Connie Darbyshire, 4.26; 6) Leffler Farms — Jackie and Mary Leffler, Americus, 4.19; and 7) Arndt Farms — Mike and Steven Arndt, Emporia, 4.18.

The top placings for heifers in the feedlot contest and average daily gains were:

1) Spring Creek Ranch — Joe and Debbie Reinert, Cassoday, 4.73 pounds per day; 2) Woodbury Farms — Howard, John and Fred Woodbury, Quenemo, 4.66; 3) Heine Farms — James, Tammy, Brad and Zach Heine, Alma, 4.36; 4) Woodbury/Lusk Cattle — Howard and John Woodbury and Ann Lusk, Quenemo and Osage City, 4.35; 5) Fowler Farms — Harry, Joan and Larry Fowler, Emporia, 4.33; 6) Leffler Farms — Jackie and Mary Leffler, Americus, 4.20; 7) Linsey Farms — Ronald, R.D. and Landon Linsey, Lebo, 4.17.

Steer Carcass Contest Winners were: 1) Anderson Ranch — Matt, Julia and Mark Anderson, Alma; 2) F&F Feeds — Harry, Joan and Larry Fowler, Emporia; 3) Ron and Janet Bathurst, Allen; 4) Jim Dause, Richmond, Ky.; 5) Lee and Marilyn Kidd, Fredonia; 6) Rocking Double E — Earl and Evan Porter, Fredonia; 7) Hannah Wise and Leigh Ann Swigert, Emporia.

Winners in the Heifer Carcass Contest were:

1) Lowder and Keith — Jim Lowder, Amarillo, Texas, and Brian Keith, Allen; 2) Leffler Farms — Jacquelyne and Natalie Leffler, Americus,; 3) Ernestine Hatch, Americus; 4) Kristen Putman, Emporia; 5) Lowder and Keith — Jim Lowder, Amarillo, Texas, and Brian Keith, Allen; 6) A & A Cattle — Jamie Adams, Neosho Rapids, and Frank and Tim Arndt, Emporia; 7) Burton and Potter — Bill Burton and Roger Potter, Emporia.

Tom Leffler of Leffler Commodities of Augusta sponsored a marketing contest in association with the Flint Hills Beef Fest for the second year. The winner of a “Bear Beware” sculpture, representing the Bull and the Bear in the marketplace, for the 2008 Feedlot portion of the contest was Rocking Double E, Earl and Evan Porter of Fredonia.
