An auction this weekend at Winter Furniture meant the end of the longtime Emporia business.
The auction began Friday and was set to run through the weekend until all the store’s merchandise was sold. A large crowd showed up looking for bargains on everything from table lamps to mattresses, headboards and bed frames.
The last regular day of business for the store was March 2.
Dick Winter, owner and son of founder Ben Winter, said last month that he had decided to close the store because of the economy.
“It started in the fall (of 2008),” Dick Winter said in an earlier Gazette interview. “We started seeing a downturn of the economy and the business.”
Dick Winter said that when the economy starts to pick up, he might look into obtaining more merchandise and opening in a different location. The 25,000 square Winter Furniture building at 709 Commercial St. is to be sold as well.
“There are a lot of good memories,” Dick Winter said in February. “We had a lot of good employees.”
Simnitt Bros. of Topeka were the auctioneers.

Is this the actual "retirement liquidation"? Or should we expect another, as we saw before? I fell for that about five years ago!

I was told they're moving to the west side.

They have played this game before. They will be back and anyone that buys something at the "retirement liquidation" will feel like they have been taken. I know I was the last time they had a going out of business sale.
And they wonder why we don't spend more money locally.
