The Olpe boys need one more win to take an undefeated record to the Class 2A State tournament.
Cole Krueger had 16 first-half points and Bradley Argabright had 11, helping to get the Eagles (22-0) off to a fast start in an easy 70-41 win over Udall in the Udall substate.
Krueger finished with 20 points for the game, Argabright had 16 and Josh Klumpe added 12.
“I thought we executed well early in the game,” Olpe coach Chris Schmidt said. “We reversed the ball well and did a good job and got some good shots inside. I think midway through the second quarter, we were still shooting over 80 percent from the field. ... Our offense, I thought, was a little better than our defense early.”
Schmidt was able to get a lot of players in the game, and nine different Eagles got on the scoreboard. Matt Redeker gave Olpe a fourth player in double figures, finishing with 10.
Olpe will take on West Elk in Saturday’s substate championship at 7 p.m. after the Patriots beat Oxford 56-52 on Thursday.
Schmidt said he believes, for the most part, that the Eagles are playing their best basketball right now.
“We still have spurts where we could be better,” he said. “But I do think that we’re doing a lot of good things. Defense has been pretty consistent. ... I do think that we’re playing pretty good right now, but I will always think that there’s room for improvement.”
