The Emporia City Commission will hold a special meeting at 9 a.m. March 11 in Conference Rooms 1A and 1B, 522 Mechanic St. to consider applications for three Emporia projects that might qualify for federal stimulus money.
The Kansas Department of Transportation is taking applications for Transportation Enhancement Projects, for which it has received $11 million under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Two project applications were approved at a special meeting last Friday, and three more projects are being studied by city staff.
The three projects the commission will be looking at include:
F Building 24th Avenue west from Prairie Street to the east property line of the proposed Lowe’s development. Grant request: $1,074,972.39; cost to city for design, right of way and utility relocation, $149,000.
F Mill and overlay Graphic Arts Road between U.S. Highway 50 and Sixth Avenue. Grant request: $234,631.62; design costs to city, $7,000.
F Mill and overlay West South Avenue between Prairie and West streets. Grant request: $364,888.58; design costs to city: $11,000.
The deadline for the applications is Friday, March 13.

Gee, don't you think we should be sure that the Lowe's is actually going in before we spend $149,000 on building a road etc? That's a lot of money to gamble on a maybe, I think. Unless the commissioners think we need a road to nowhere. A nice metaphor, at least. But an expensive one.

It doesn't matter if Lowe's is coming or not because as we all know the west side of town needs the repairs more than any other..............no wait..............no it doesn't.

Actually 24th does need repaired. I drive it once a week and there are many pot holes. Even without any new buisnesses there that road has lots of traffic on it. In my opinion it needs the work done worse than South Ave., and I live on the south side of town so drive that road much more frequently.

How about the side streets on the south side? They have been really bad for years, even in the "good" times.
