Time to order Angel Food for March

Thursday, March 5, 2009

Angel Food distributions in Lyon County are done through the Emporia Church of the Nazarene, 2931 W. 24th Ave.; Grace United Methodist Church, 2 S. Neosho St.; Emporia Presbyterian Church, 802 Commercial St.; and Americus Presbyterian Church in Americus.

This month, a new “allergen-free” food box will be added to the growing list of boxes available to the public.

The regular box, at $30, will contain ribeye steaks, split chicken breasts, country fried steak patties, 80/20 ground beef, fully cooked meatballs, mild Italian sausage, deli-sliced ham, California blend vegetables, green beans, shoestring fries, pasta, marinara sauce, condensed soup, pinto beans, 2 percent shelf-stable milk, one dozen eggs, and dessert.

The senior convenience box, with 10 fully cooked, nutritionally balanced meals, will contain these entrees: barbecue pork rib patty, red beans and rice with smoked sausage, home-style meatloaf with zesty tomato sauce, Asian-style pork fried rice, peppered beef patty, flame-broiled Salisbury steak with brown gravy, chicken sausage with seasoned baked beans, pot roast and gravy with vegetables, chicken and bean burrito with cheesy sauce, and char-broiled beef meatballs with rice and gravy. Each meal will include three ounces of protein, a starch, and two vegetables or fruits.

The allergen-free food has been processed to eliminate eight allergens: peanuts, soybeans, milk, eggs, fish, crustacea, tree nuts and gluten (wheat, rye and barley).

The box will contain one pound each of coated chicken tenders, coated breast fillets, coated chicken nuggets, coated chicken wings and coated cubed steak (chicken-fried steak).

Six bonus boxes also are available for people who buy regular boxes of food. This month, special boxes will be offered for Easter dinner:

F Box 1 will contain 7 pounds of meat, including New York strip steaks, thick-cut pork chops, baby-back ribs and bratwurst with cheese for $22.

F Box 2 is a 4.5-pound meat combo with sirloin strip steaks and bacon-wrapped chicken filet for $21.

F Box 3 is the Easter dinner box, with meatloaf from “pure beef seasoned with vegetables,” choice cut beef roast, and a boneless pork roast for $22.

F Box 4 is the Easter sides box and contains two pounds each of heat-and-serve corn, green beans, mashed potatoes, one brown gravy mix, cornbread stuffing, 8 dinner rolls, and dessert for $19.

F Box 5 will contain 10 pounds of breaded chicken tenders for $18.

F Box 6 will contain 18 pounds of fruits and vegetables, including Idaho baking potatoes, North Carolina sweet potatoes, cabbage, carrots, yellow onions, fresh jumbo garlic, cantaloupe, Valencia oranges, honey tangerines, Granny Smith apples, Fuji apples, and tree-ripened mangos.

Distribution will be on March 28. Money orders, cash, and Vision cards are accepted as payment; checks are not. Any food not picked up at the stated times will be donated to needy people.
