Zoo event

The David Traylor Zoo will observe the start of Daylight Saving Time with “Spring Forward for Amphibians” from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the zoo. Children can participate in amphibian-related crafts and activities and the zoo’s amphibians will be on display.

A news release says that at least a third of all known amphibian species are threatened with extinction. The zoo is encouraging people to get involved in protecting local amphibians and their habitats.

Farmers’ Market meeting

The Emporia Farmers’ Market will have its annual meeting beginning with a potluck dinner at 4 p.m. Sunday at the west campus of Emporia Presbyterian Church, 1702 W. 15th Ave. The meeting will start at 4:30 p.m.

People attending the dinner are asked to bring a dish to share and table service.

New developments for the 2009 season will be discussed in the meeting, including participation in the federal nutrition program.

Friends of the Emporia Farmers’ Market and market vendors in good standing may vote in the meeting.

The meeting and dinner are also open to anyone interested in becoming a vendor.

Fire danger

The National Weather Service says there is an extreme danger of range fires this afternoon in Lyon and Chase counties. Continued dry weather and high winds with gusts up to 30 mph will make fires difficult to control. Ranchers planning controlled burns are urged to check with local authorities before beginning.

The weather service says there is a chance of rain and thunderstorms Friday night through Saturday.
