Girls State applications
The American Legion Auxiliary of Ball-McColm Unit 5 is accepting applications for Sunflower Girls State 2009 to be held June 7-12 at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. There is no cost for the attendees. The Ball-McColm Unit covers girls completing their junior year in high school during the 2008-09 school year at Emporia, Northern Heights, Madison, Olpe, Hartford and Chase County high schools.
During the week in June, speakers from government at various levels and community leaders will share their experiences with the girls. They will also learn the entire election process — from registering to vote to electing their own governor and senators.
The girls stay on campus at KU and go to sessions at the Lied Center, the Dole Center and in the dormitory. They also spend part of a day in Topeka touring the legislative chambers.
For more information, contact a high school counselor, call the American Legion at 342-1119 or Girls State chairman Sandy Hammerl at 342-1208 for the application, which is due March 31.
