Madison came from behind in the fourth quarter and will head into substate on a winning note, beating Hartford 53-45 on Saturday to win its Class 1A Regional.
The Bulldogs were down by as many as nine in the fourth quarter, but coach Alan Brown got his team to regroup after calling timeout. Madison employed its pressure defense and forced the Jaguars into turnovers, and the Bulldogs put up 20 points in the fourth quarter. Senior Michael Luthi dropped 26 points for the Bulldogs.
“Michael Luthi stepped up again,” Brown said. “When he is on, he’s hard to stop. Also Kale Schankie shot and made key free throws.”
Schankie scored nine points and was 7-for-8 from the foul line.
Adam Ewy scored 14 points to lead Hartford, and Craig Woods added 11.
Madison and Hartford will both be in action Friday in their respective substates. The Bulldogs (15-8) will be in the Class 1A El Dorado substate and will take on Burrton (16-7) at 7:30 p.m. Hartford (10-12) will be in the Emporia substate and will play Goessel (18-5) at 7:30.

Chase County played its way into the Class 2A Udall substate with a rout of Flinthills, and the Bulldogs will be rewarded with a trip to undefeated Olpe’s gym tonight.
Jesse Cole scored 15 points for the Bulldogs (5-15), who held Flinthhills to three, five and nine points in the first three quarters. Greg Davis added 10 points. The Bulldogs tip off against Olpe tonight at 7 p.m.

Like the boys, the Madison girls were also victorious in their Regional, led by 19 points from Shelby Buster in a win over Waverly.
The Bulldogs ran up 20 points in each of the first two quarters, including a pair of threes by Chelcie Schankie and one by Morgan Stout in the first quarter. They put up a 23-point finishing kick in the fourth, with Buster scoring nine of her points.
Tera Titus added 15 points for Madison, Schankie had 12 and Stout had 11. The Bulldogs will try to navigate the strong El Dorado substate beginning Thursday. Their first-round opponent will be St. Paul (19-4) at 6 p.m. On the other side of the bracket are Argonia (23-0) and Little River (14-9).
