Emporian in accident

Monday, March 2, 2009

Icy roads caused an accident Saturday morning that injured Emporian Gina Poertner, 41.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that Poertner lost control of the 2000 GMC utility vehicle she was driving on Interstate Highway 35 about milepost 198 at 8:45 a.m. Saturday. The SUV went through the median and into the southbound lanes where it struck a 2002 Honda CRV driven by Tessa N. Pettyjohn, 18, of Olathe.

Pettyjohn was taken to Overland Park Regional Hospital. The KHP reported Poertner was injured, but did not say whether she was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Both women were wearing safety restraints.

Earlier on Saturday, a Council Grove man, Tyler J. Sellers, was involved in an accident shortly after midnight on I-35 at Milepost 188.5.

According to the KHP report, Sellers was driving a 2005 Suzuki Verona at a high rate of speed and ran into the rear of a 1981 Plymouth Reliant driven by William P. Mauszycki, 47, of Ottawa.

Mauszycki’s vehicle ran into the right ditch and overturned. He was not wearing a safety restraint and was thrown from the car. Franklin County emergency medical technicians took Mauszycki by ambulance to Overland Park Regional Hospital.

Sellers was wearing a safety restraint.
