A three-county vehicle chase early Monday morning ended in the arrest of a Paola man and the recovery of a pickup truck reported stolen earlier in Linn County.
According to a news release from Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputy James Baker, a deputy initiated a traffic stop for speeding about 12:23 a.m. Monday at Milepost 128 on Interstate Highway 35.
The driver of the black Chevrolet pickup, Benjamin O. Wobker, 32, of Paola, pulled off the shoulder of the highway at Industrial Road, then returned to the interstate. The chase went down the ramp at Industrial and on to the roundabout, toward the Kansas Turnpike, before Wobker turned the truck around in the median and headed north on I-35.
Two deputies chased the truck through Lyon County, Baker said. At one point, Wobker attempted to run one of the deputies off the road and into a bridge. The chase continued through Coffey County at speeds up to 95 to 100 miles per hour.
Coffey County deputies deployed Stop Sticks at the ramp at Highway 75 to deflate tires on the pickup.
“At the Osage County line, Osage County sheriff’s deputies were able to deflate the remaining tires with a second set of Stop Sticks,” Baker said.
Deputies were able to block the pickup and slow down the pursuit.
“The black pickup rear-ended one of the Lyon County deputies’ vehicles and the deputies were able to bring the vehicle to a stop,” Baker said.
Wobker was arrested on multiple, unspecified charges and is being held in the Lyon County Jail.
Burlington police also assisted in the pursuit, Baker said.
