Always right

I WAS IN A STORE, buying a few things that I needed. The night employee and I talked about our day like always. I go in this store on a regular basis, see friends who shop there, too. Anyway, the girl was called to the office for helping a customer. I think that’s wrong.

I’m in and out of stores every day, paying them, and it’s like they’re scared to help or give you a few minutes of their time. If I did that in a retail store, I’d be cheating the customer. If I give a business money, I would like to be treated like a customer, instead of dealing with employees who are required to be rude to the customer.

Whether you believe that “customer service” is still the name of the game, chances are that it will bring a customer back. In my opinion, customer service is really bad in and out of town. I know this isn’t the ’70s and ’80s, but you have to take care of the customer if you work in the public.

If you just don’t care, remember there’s somebody always watching. The customer has feelings, too. There was a time when the customer was right. It seems it’s not that way anymore.

Thanks for listening.

Great response, crack. I agree. I've noticed this similar situation of talking up the help frequently at a convenience store where I go for gasoline. I'd sure put a stop to it if I were the manager.

I went into my favorite turkey shack the other day to get a "Turkey Leg on a Stick" and the gal behind the counter hardly even looked at me. She just trembled and kept glancing over to what I assume was the manager, maybe the owner, I'm not sure. The manager/owner was just staring at her tapping his left palm with the gold plated turkey leg in his right hand. It was kinda freaky and not very good service but man was that some gooooood turkey!

If the conversation just lasted the amount of time it took to ring up the order, I don't see a problem there. A little human interaction makes people feel good. If it was a long drawn out conversation, that's different. Many many moons ago I worked at a fast food restaurant which shall remain unnamed. There was 1 woman trying to clean the lobby and was way behind. There were 2 people in my area standing idle. I went out to clear tables so people could sit down to eat. People were actually standing holding trays without a clean table. I got about 3 tables cleared and wiped down when the manager swooped down on me and hauled me away. I got chewed out for doing the other woman's job. Still no customers in my area, by the way. A customer did defend me and told the manager she was out of line.

Seriously, you made me flash on the Renaissance Festival. :)

I agree crackinsack....there was too much left out of this story. If this is a case where a friend is chatting it up with an employee, high five to the manager on duty for stepping in. I get so tired of going into the store and having to stand in line and listen to people talking on end about what's going on in their life. One convenience store on 6th street in particular is very bad for this. Seems everytime I stop there for gas, the employees on duty are are constantly talking about their home life or that of others, everything from fights with their kids or spouses, what their plans are for the weekend, who did what to whom, believe me...a customer gets tired of hearing all this every time they convenient a store. I think Managers should start cracking down on this. Friends hanging out and employees discussing their life matters while on duty is wrong and inconsiderate.

Few have complained longer or louder about poor service on these boards than I.....but I too agree this sounds a little to much like one of the root causes of poor service......an employeee more interested in talking to friend than in doing their job.
If thats the case I say good job manager.....and to Mr McCoy.....visit with your friends on their own time.
