Be careful driving during harvest

Saturday, June 27, 2009

The wheat is turning in Kansas and that means harvest time, which equates to more harvest equipment being on the roadways.

Extra caution needs to be taken to prevent accidents involving vehicles and harvest equipment, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

“Located in the heart of the nation, Kansas is known for its farming operations,” said Col. Terry Maple of the Kansas Highway Patrol. “Agriculture is an important industry within the state. During harvest, it’s important that we drive responsible to ensure the safety of the farmers and other motorists on the roads throughout the state of Kansas.”

Most farm equipment is only designed to drive 15-25 miles per hour — not highway speeds.

Below are some safety tips from the Kansas Highway Patrol:

• Don’t assume the farmer knows you’re there.

• Pass with extreme caution.

• Allow extra room when following farm equipment.

• Be patient. A farmer can’t always move over to let motorists by.

• Think of the slow moving vehicle emblem as a warning to adjust your speed.

• Pay attention.

• Always wear seatbelts and use child safety restraints.
