Emporia State will be sending their largest contingent ever to the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships starting today.
Katie Mona, Vincent Howze, Derwin Hall and Asher Delmott will be representing ESU in Eugene, Ore. this weekend.
“We’re excited to take four athletes to Eugene for the US Junior Championships,” ESU track and field coach Dave Harris said. “In the past we have only taken one or two athletes. This is the most we have ever taken from ESU.”
Mona is the highest ranked Hornet in the championships. Her MIAA championship time of 10:03.04 has her ranked second in the 3,000 meters behind two-time Penn Relays champion Stephanie Morgan, who is headed to Baylor.
Howze is ranked seventh in the 400-meter hurdles. His entry time of 52.25 earned him a third place showing at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Hall is ranked 10th in the 100 meters with a time of 10.56 seconds set at the ESU/ATG Sports Qualifier.
Delmott is just one of 12 athletes to have actually run a 3,000-meter steeplechase in the field of 20 with the rest running various distances in high school. Delmott ran a 9:32.38 to place fourth at the MIAA Championships.
The USA Championships are held at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon. Television coverage is slated for Friday from 7-9 p.m., Saturday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on ESPN and on Sunday from 3-5 p.m. on NBC. Live streaming video is available at the usatf.org site as well.
