Pats on the Back

Friday, June 26, 2009

EMPORIA AAA pitcher Sean Carr, who pitched a near-shutout last week against Rossville. He pitched all nine innings and the final score was 7-1.

• The Hays House restaurant at Council Grove, which was chosen — to no surprise to those who have eaten there — as one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Cuisine. The Hays House has been in business at the same stand on Main Street in Council Grove since main street was just a short stretch of the Santa Fe Trail.

• Former Emporia State University pitcher Ryan Anthony, who has been signed to a AAA contract by the Cleveland Indians. He’ll be playing for the club’s team in Niles, Ohio.

• Mary Helmer and Homer Garza, who were honored by the Emporia Board of Education this week for their service on the board. Garza had to resign last year after accepting an out-of-town job and Helmer has announced that she would not run for a third term.

• The Chase County High School alumni, who are having their annual reunion this weekend. Chase County does the reunions right, including a Saturday parade in Cottonwood Falls.

• Emporia firefighters Bill West and Brandon Mendoza, who spent a hot day in Crisis City on Tuesday. Crisis City is a disaster-training site near Salina, and the two spent the day in training with emergency workers from several states.

• Chase County native Addie Sorace, who, at 93, has written a memoir of Depression days in the Flint Hills.

• Matt Slater, who is driving ahead on his plan to resurrect the old Twin Rivers Festival and at the same time give Emporia a Fourth of July celebration worth staying in town for.

• Liz Conrade, who has been hired away from Newman Regional Health to become the new executive director of the Flint Hills Community Health Center.

• Brendy Allison, community service officer with the Emporia Police Department, who is helping to revive the city’s Neighborhood Watch program.
