DEAREST citizens of the Emporia:
For just over two days I had the honor and pleasure of being a small part of your community. As a new inductee into the National Teachers Hall of Fame I had the opportunity to see up close how a town truly can roll out the red carpet.
From the incredible hosts families who catered to my family’s and my every need to the individuals we all met along the way during various activities, you impressed me! You impressed upon me the genuine appreciation you have for educators. You showed the finest example of what hospitality at its very best is. The interactions with individuals I had from the youngest to the most seasoned will forever be fond memories of mine.
Thank you for the time, energy and devotion you pour into making the National Teachers Hall of Fame home the best possible place to be for a teacher.

How nice. I remember seeing the group taking a tour of the town. They had stopped at Amanda's for lunch. Many people were smiling at them and even stopping to say a few words. She's right, Emporia people are pretty hospitable.

Thank you Patrice!
I attended the ceremony during the choir. When they read the comments that some of the students stated, I nearly cried. You teachers have one of the most difficult jobs, by far; to influence those kids the way you’ all did was impressive.
Thank you and all the other teachers, past & present, that have influenced mine & and my children’s' lives (and the patience, knowledge and courage to do so).

When I was in the eighth grade attending what is now called Lowther South we suddenly got a new literature teacher on her very first job. At the time I was a punk little juvinile delinquent from south of the tracks and me some of my buddies made her life a living hell.
In fact she only remaind at the school one semester before disappearing from my life foreever. I can't even recall her name. But in those few short weeks, probably without her ever knowing it, she opened my eyes to the fact that I did have a brain. And if I would but choose to use that brain, I could think and thereby do wonderful things. She in fact changed my life in ways that just might have saved me from dying in jail.....the fate of my best friend from that era.
Every time great teachers are mentioned I think of that girl and wonder what ever became of her. If by some miracle she should happen to see this.....I just want her to know that the little punk that finally saw a glimmer of light while studying the Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner back in the eighth grade so long ago thanks her from the bottom of his heart.
Great teachers are rare and wonderful gifts.
