Tallgrass butterfly count set Saturday
Wednesday, June 24, 2009
The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve will hold the first annual Marvin Schwilling Memorial Butterfly Count on Saturday at the preserve.
The census was named in honor of Marvin Schwilling, who was a biologist/naturalist born and raised in Chase County. The census will take place on and around the preserve. It will begin at 9 a.m. at the preserve’s historic stone barn. Following an orientation, participants will head out to the prairie to ID and count butterflies.
No prior experience in identifying butterflies is necessary. Participants are asked to bring water, binoculars, sunscreen and bug spray. A digital camera also is suggested.
The preserve suggests people wear hiking boots, hats and long pants. Box lunches will be available for $5. RSVP at (620) 273-6034 to reserve lunch. Participants can bring their own lunches as well. Counts will conclude around 3 p.m.
The preserve is located two miles north of Strong City on Kansas State Highway 177. For more information on the preserve call (620) 273-8494.
