Optimists
Casey Woods, director of Main Street, was welcomed as the newest member of the Flint Hills Optimist Club. Speakers in May have included Mike Dorcey, who talked about the organization of volunteers in response to emergencies; Tracy Graham, with the Farmers Market; John Heim, who gave a report about USD 253; and Lori Heller, who told members about the Emporia Public Library summer reading program for children.The club made a monetary donation to the EPL reading program. Members also discussed fireworks for the Fourth of July. Election of officers was held in late May.
Sertoma
The Sertoma Club of Emporia will install new officers at an evening dinner meeting on Thursday at the Guesthouse Inn. Recent speakers have included George Crocker, who described a visit to Soviet Russia, and member Jerry McCalla of R3 Energy, who talked about the bio-diesel plant in Cottonwood Falls. Mark and Terri Summey were thanked for their work in the Sertoma booth at the recent Keep It a Safe Summer event at the Lyon County fairgrounds.
