Board to honor Helmer, Garza

Monday, June 22, 2009

Mary Helmer and Homer Garza will be guests at a reception Wednesday evening before a meeting of the Emporia board of education.

The meeting on Wednesday, in the Mary Herbert Learning Center, 1700 W. Seventh Ave., will be the last meeting for Helmer, who did not run in the spring for another term on the board.

Garza resigned last year, after accepting an out-of-town job. His work schedule, and the commute between the job and his home in Emporia, left Garza unable to attend board meetings.

Helmer announced in January that she would not run for a third term on the school board, though she left open an option to run later.

“I may consider running again in a few years, when my life settles down a bit,” Helmer said in an interview earlier this year.

The reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. and is open to the public.

The board of education meeting will start at 7 p.m.

Reports to the board will consume much of the meeting time, according to the agenda.

An update will be presented on progress of an energy savings program being instituted within the school district.

A report also will be made on the status of a construction and remodeling project at Village School.

The board approved an addition at the school during the 2007-08 school year. However, the project was put on hold in 2008, after Tyson Fresh Meats eliminated approximately 1,700 jobs on Jan. 25, 2008.

The board resurrected the project later that year and approved a bid of $1,115,000, including an alternate for cafeteria work and another for a concrete play area.

The national economy worked in favor of the school board and brought in bids more favorable to the district when they were opened in December 2008.

The winning bid was $242,470 under the architect’s original estimates and $308,000 under the amount that earlier had been budgeted for the project.

During Wednesday evening’s meeting, the board also will hear a report on an efficiency and effectiveness study by the Center for Innovative School Leadership.

Other items on the agenda include a request to approve application for a juvenile delinquency prevention trust fund grant and meal prices for the 2009-2010 school year.

The board has scheduled budget-related meetings in July and August.

A budget study session is planned at 6:30 p.m. on July 20. A public budget workshop will begin at 6 p.m. on Aug. 5, with a formal budget hearing set at 7 p.m. the same evening.

All of the meetings are open to the public, and all will be held at the Mary Herbert building.
