• Getting students to go into teaching and getting teachers to stay were among the topics of conversation Thursday as this year’s National Teachers Hall of Fame inductees held a roundtable on issues faced by today’s educators. The hall of fame’s class of 2009 reached a consensus on the topics under discussion, including a shared wariness of merit pay for teachers and the need to reform No Child Left Behind. The five also stressed the importance of mentor programs for new teachers.
• A National Teachers Hall of Fame inductee reunites with a student attending a conference at Emporia State University.
• The fourth-quarter honor roll has been announced at Emporia Middle School. Students must have a grade-point average of 3.6 or higher to be included on the list.
